Sensory Roots: a natural path to wellness

Why Sensory Roots?

Our sensory system is the root of our wellbeing, guiding us from birth through life’s journey. By tapping into our sensory systems, especially in natural environments, we can enhance our sense of wellbeing, foster deeper connections , and develop resilient coping mechanisms to navigate life’s challenges. Nature amplifies our innate sensory capabilities, allowing us to thrive and find harmony within ourselves and the world around us.

Our Services

Group Services

Garden & Nature based Play Groups

Nature & gardening outdoor activities based on therapeutic principles of the benefits of outdoor play. Focus on these groups is on the benefits and use of gardening and nature to promote wellness. Every session will have a chance to leave with one creative project or intervention, and something from the garden (i.e nature bouquets, eggs, etc).

Group Occupational Therapy

This nature-based occupational therapy program leverages gardening and outdoor activities to develop various skills. It focuses sensory and emotion regulation, cognitive development-problem solving, and planning, as well as enhancing social skills and engagement.

Participants will strengthen their connectedness to others and nature, build resilience through natural challenges. The program also aims to develop lifelong coping skills, promote healthy eating through garden-grown vegetables, and improve fine and gross motor skills using organic materials.

Individual Occupational Therapy

A comprehensive occupational therapy assessment will explore challenges in everyday tasks (occupations), with an initial focus on 2-3 selected occupational domains. Incorporating nature-based principles, such as gardening and other outdoor activities, this process will emphasize sensory health and connection with natural environments. Additional domains will be assessed as needed, based on emerging concerns. The assessment will include clinical interviews, direct observations, and standardized occupational therapy tools, fostering a holistic understanding of the individual’s needs.

In home services

Provide therapeutic services for occupational therapy and therapeutic horticulture both in home and in the community. Provide unique interventions in the natural environment and help to enhance spaces and places in order to foster a greater sense of well being. Examples would be helping to develop a sensory space with use of therapeutic plants in ones backyard, and finding natural strategies for self regulation in the home.
